Ann Markusen

American economist who studied why some regions hold onto economic activity while others watch it pass through.
Markusen asked what makes an industry stay put when capital can go anywhere. Her answer is «sticky places»: territories with suppliers, institutions, training and relationships that are expensive to reproduce elsewhere.
She was also among the first to warn against cultural-district policies applied off the shelf. Her critique is not of art but of the formula: copying another city's model without the economic base that existed there produces a pretty neighbourhood and no economy.
