That layered analysis, done by hand in 1969, is the conceptual forerunner of the geographic information systems that now underpin planning and environmental management; McHarg formulated the method before the tool existed.

Design with Nature does not stop at the city: it addresses design at large scale, whole regions and rural landscapes. McHarg argues that planning must take into account the ecological processes operating at regional scale — a watershed, a coastline — and that no human intervention can be separated from that context. His approach includes preserving natural areas and also restoring damaged ecosystems, to improve long-term environmental resilience. The Woodlands, near Houston, planned by his firm in the 1970s around natural drainage, was his practical demonstration.
